Matt Guion studied music education at Bowling Green State University (GO FALCONS!) in northwest Ohio, earning both a Bachelors and Masters degree. While living in northwest Ohio, he worked as a musical director, accompanist, and vocal coach and tutor for the Horizon Youth Theatre in Bowling Green, the Children’s Theatre Workshop in Toledo, and the Toledo School for the Arts. He has worked with students from ages 6 to 18 on various youth theatre productions, including Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, Once Upon a Mattress, A Year With Frog and Toad, and The Secret Garden Spring Edition. He has also performed in a number of musical productions, both in Bowling Green and here in Hamilton. He first worked with Rise Up for the Triple Threat Summer Intensive 2023, where he rehearsed music with the youngest group of performers. Matt’s philosophy on music is that every song tells a story, and it’s the performer’s job to communicate that story to the audience. As such, he will focus on the fundamentals of vocal projection and enunciation to make sure each word is understood, as well as musical expression and remaining present in song, going beyond the notes and words and using the voice and the face to tell the story. He also hopes to show students how to interpret the music themselves to find the story of each song, and more importantly, to see how that story speaks to them personally and how it might speak to their audience, giving life to any performance, whether it be an audition or a full production
